The Process & What to Expect

Arrival Our team will meet with you and your pet, giving you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Children and other pets are welcome to attend - the decision is entirely yours. We will collect your informed consent to proceed. We have the ability to take payment prior to or upon arrival of the appointment. Having the financial component completed, your focus can be solely on your beloved pet. We will review the process of sedation, euthanasia and aftercare.

Sedation The last gift you can give your beloved pet is a peaceful departure from this world. This sedation step uses a combination of pain and sedative medications to ensure comfort and serenity. The injection may cause temporary discomfort, but the use of distraction, treats if desired, and gentle holding minimizes this. Your pet will welcome the medication and transition into a peaceful sleep or quiet state before the final euthanasia injection is given. Every individual is different and we will determine if any further sedation may be required. While the sedation takes effect and your pet begins to relax, you're welcomed to share your last hugs and kisses before final rest.

Euthanasia When you and your family are ready we will carefully administer the final injection. This injection is most commonly administered into a vein but the veterinarian will determine the most appropriate approach. This is an overdose of an anesthetic. Your cherished pet will then painlessly and peacefully pass away.

Transfer You may have as much time and privacy as you need to say goodbye to your beloved pet. If you have elected cremation, when you're ready, we will carry your pet to our vehicle. If you wish to send a blanket with your pet, please know this will not be cremated along with your pet but it can be donated to a shelter thereafter. Your pet will be placed on a soft surface in the vehicle and treated with the utmost dignity and respect regardless of your cremation choices. Assistance from an able individual may be required depending on you pet's size and we do have a stretcher when needed.

Aftercare Most people choose to have their pets cremated although some choose burial or other options. If you choose cremation, we would facilitate that for you using Gateway Pet Memorial, a company with an outstanding reputation for ethical behaviour and integrity. You have the option to have your pet cremated privately where only your pet is present in the cremation chamber during the cremation process and their remains are returned to you in an urn of your choosing . The alternative option is communal cremation whereby your pet is cremated with other pets and the ashes are not returned to you. The communal remains are collected and placed in a communal burial lot at Gateway's pet cemetery.

Memorialization There are countless ways to honour the memory of your beloved pet, from planting a tree or a flower garden to donating to a favourite animal charity to engaging in other meaningful projects. Some people choose to purchase keepsake jewelry, specialty urns or custom paw print mementos as a lasting tribute to their cherished companion. If you are interested in commemoratives, please visit Gateway. We will provide price information on any items upon request.
